Outdoors at your peril

Do you ever enjoy putting on a pair of these? Those are my walking boots. I like to walk as well.

Have you ever thought about how people perhaps on holiday, who enjoy walking or hiking, can sometimes get into trouble? This summer, I'm thinking perhaps again of Dr Michael Mosley, who went for a walk on his Greek island holiday, got very dehydrated and didn't return. Or the British teenager, Jay Slater, who went missing on the island of Tenerife, while attempting an 11-hour walk back to his accommodation. In each case, there was a very sad outcome. Being able to call for help and give a precise location may have changed the outcome in both these cases, though a usable mobile phone was also lacking. It's perhaps a lesson too. We don't think of it like that. We don't think of our phones being a 'safety device', but in these situations, they are. So having a charged mobile phone with you is very sensible.

I watched my auntie plunge 60 feet down a Swiss mountainside

So in that context, this is a news article which appeared in the Manchester Evening News in the UK and was picked up by Apple News and MSN. So it was read much more widely. The headline of this article, "I watched my auntie plunge 60 feet down a Swiss mountainside. Then three words saved her life."

So this is a quote from a young man called Edward Farnworth, who went hiking in Switzerland with his aunt, Sarah Robert. As you might imagine, the terrain, the land, if you like, in Switzerland, it's challenging, not least because a lot of it is mountainous. For hikers, that's what's enjoyable. You climb a steep mountain and you get the reward of a wonderful view. And there are some very steep hillsides to negotiate in Switzerland. But Edward Farnworth and Sarah Robert are experienced hikers who take great enjoyment in the outdoors. Edward, aged 31, who works for BP in the UK, was leading their descent down a mountainside when Sarah lost her footing and fell more than 60 feet. That's nearly 20 meters down the mountainside. Sarah was seriously injured. As she fell, she collided with rocks and trees. And Edward recalled her hitting her head extremely hard on a tree as she went down. After that, she made no noise. Edward realised straight away they were on steep ground, in woods with no landmarks, no way of explaining where they were. They hadn't seen many other people on the trail that they'd been using that day either. Initially, Edward had no idea how he was going to get help for his auntie.

Describe any location on Earth using just three words

Until that is, he remembered that on his mobile phone, he had an app called 'what3words'.

This app is a really well thought out idea. It gives its users a unique three word code that identifies their precise location. What3words uses software that has mapped the whole surface of the earth and divided it into three metre squares. Each three metre square is uniquely named using three words. That's an amazing thing in itself to have done and a brilliant idea. And the app is known to the emergency services in many countries. And fortunately, Swiss Mountain Rescue were no exception to this. As he rang the emergency services, Edward Farnworth just had to say three words to communicate their precise location. 'Crabmeat, Hers, Froze'. This gave the emergency services the precise location and they were able to get a helicopter out to Sarah within 25 minutes.

Serious injuries were sustained

And the rescue was very necessary. Sarah was treated on the ground for 45 minutes before she could be airlifted to hospital. And she remained in hospital for over a week after the accident. And at this point, she's still wearing a neck brace. During the fall, she suffered a severe head wound and concussion. C-O-N-C-U-S-S-I-O-N. That's where there's an injury to the brain after a serious blow to the head, which affects the brain's functioning. Sarah couldn't remember anything about the accident. She also had a fractured spine, a broken wrist, numerous cuts and bruises. Sarah had to have surgery to put a metal plate into her arm and was in hospital for over a week.

Edward spoke about his fears about how badly hurt Sarah had been in the accident and his fear of having to tell other family members the bad news. His mother and his aunt are sisters and particularly close. But he was also very aware that the news could have been very much worse if he'd not had what3words, the app, on his phone.

A quote for you to practise on

Sarah Robert herself cannot remember the accident at all. Here is a quote from her for you to practise on.

"What3words help speed up the whole treatment process, for which I am extremely grateful. Without it, I don't see how I would have got the help I needed. And things may have ended much worse.

I had never heard of or used the app before my nephew explained it to me. But I'm so thankful he did."

Download this free app in case you need to save a life!

UK emergency services are recommending that people download this free app. As 90% of Brits enjoy outdoor activities during the summer, this app saves lives when there is a need to accurately identify your location. And of course, it's worldwide. Every bit of the Earth's surface has been mapped out and every three metre square associated with a unique three-word code. So wherever you do your walking, your hiking, or whatever slightly perilous activity you enjoy in your leisure time, this app will work wherever you are. I think it's a really brilliant idea as well that every three metre square over the whole Earth is covered by a unique code.

The whole surface of the Earth!

Goodbye

So why not download that app today so that you're familiar with it and you've got it on your phone in case of an emergency? Let us know what you think of this. We'd love to hear from you.

Enough for now. Have a lovely day. Speak to you again soon. Goodbye.
