There are many places to visit in London for free, but for the price of a cocktail you can get some fantastic views of London
So today’s podcast. Well, this is really just a good travel tip for you, if you visit London. There are lots of really famous views of London and many of the best views are found of course, when you’re up high. So one of the famous attractions in London is the London Eye.
If you don’t know what this is, it’s basically a very large wheel, which turns very slowly – and which has carriages or ‘pods’ as they’re called, which are mainly made out of glass, so that you can look around at the famous buildings and take photographs. It’s just the same in any major city – you might go to the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris and take in the view. You might climb to the top of the Empire State Building in New York. So lots of famous tall buildings in every major city.
Enjoy an English lesson and an unusual place to visit in London
If you would like a slightly different view – so right from the east of London this time? Well, if you travel on the London Underground to Canary Wharf (careful not to mix that up with Canada Water, which is the stop before on the Jubilee Line), you can walk across to the Novotel, which is on Marsh Wall, on the Isle of Dogs.
If you don’t know the Isle of Dogs – this is a loop in middle of the River Thames, near the Millenium Dome, near the O2. So the Novotel, is not a particularly pretty building – it’s all modern and concrete and unremarkable. But….and here’s the good thing, if you fancy a nice cocktail with a view – there is a lovely cocktail bar on the 38th floor, with huge glass windows.

Although east London is not a pretty place for pictures, if you can get high enough the view of London is amazing
You can reserve a table if it’s a really busy time when you go, but usually you can find a space. I went at 5 o’clock on a Friday evening – and there were spare tables. You will pay a bit for your cocktails – £12 each perhaps – but the views are fantastic. So it’s on the 38th floor, and you can see all the way across to West London. You can see the London Eye and lots of other landmarks in the distance.
What I really like about it, is that it’s difficult at ground level, when you’re on the Isle of Dogs to get a sense of where you are on the map. That’s because there’s water in every direction – whether it’s canals, docks or the River Thames – so it’s really confusing. But being up on the 38th floor, you can see the curve of the river, which you’ll recognise from the map, so that you can see which way is west, which way is north etc.
So if you’re in London, and you’ve bought an all day ticket for the underground and you fancy rounding off with a cocktail and a view. there’s an idea for you.
